With the summer months approaching, many of you may begin to feel anxious or stressed about your bodies. If you’re embarrassed or ashamed of how you look and are dreading the thought of wearing shorts or a bikini, don’t worry. It’s normal for people to be self-conscious about their bodies.
Real problems occur when people genuinely hate themselves. If feelings about your body are impeding your enjoyment of life, it’s time to change your perspective.
Your body is equal parts amazing and beautiful. It may not be your ideal size, shape, or weight. It might carry a blemish, scar or stretch mark here and there, but it is unique.
You are the only person on the planet with your body. It’s adaptable, it communicates with you, it moves, it fights off infections, it’s strong, it can heal, it can interact with other bodies… the list goes on. We all need reminding of how amazing our bodies are from time to time. What’s more important is that we change our thoughts and behavior in order to become body positive all the time.
Here are seven useful tips to reinforce body positivity:
Focus on your strengths
Focus on the wonderful things that your body can do. The fact that you have one in the first place is pretty amazing. Be grateful for what you have and focus on the positives. Negative thinking is of no use to you.
What do you love about your body?
Remind yourself of what you love about your body every day. This may be difficult at first, so here’s a great technique to get you started:
Begin your day by writing down three things that you love about your body (they can be tiny things). Or, try saying these things aloud in the mirror. This positive reinforcement will help you learn to love yourself.
Adjust your body ideals
Forget about what’s being shoved down your throat by the media. Set your own body standards and embrace imperfection.
Stay in control
Take the best care possible of your body. This means having proper hygiene and skincare routines. It can also involve eating and exercise.
When you’re in control of your body, you can take action. If you are self-conscious about acne scars, reach out to acne scar treatment experts for advice. If you’re worried about your health, see a doctor. If your issues are out of your control, cast them aside.
Reward your body
It’s okay to treat yourself. Reward your body by having a spa day, getting a massage, or going for a facial. You deserve it.
Surround yourself with positive people
Negative people are toxic. Their energy is harmful to you and your mental health. By surrounding yourself with positive people, you are enabling yourself for happiness and success. Positivity breeds empowerment.
Positive relationships go both ways. It’s important to be supportive and positive towards your friends too.
Don’t compare yourself with anyone
President Theodore Roosevelt famously said that “comparison is the thief of joy”.
Look to others for inspiration, positivity, and motivation, but never compare. By comparing yourself to others, you tear down your self-worth. Your life is unique and has its own path.
