Most people are working from home now and for many of us, that is a good thing. We’re now more in touch with our work because we don’t arrive at work, groggy, and disheveled. We can work for longer hours, so get paid more, yet there’s less travel! But there are many things about remote working that aren’t good for those of us that are disabled. For one thing, being able to go to work allowed us to go outside the house and live a ‘normal’ life again. But now that our movements are limited to what we do inside the house, we can feel so blue and desperate to get out. So here are some things you can do to boost your mental health if you’re working from home and are a disabled person.
Go outside
Many people have chosen to make a morning walk or jog a routine now that the only outdoor time we can get is for exercise and or well-being. We recommend that disabled people do this, no matter if you’re on crutches or need a wheelchair. Thanks to modern wheelchair ramps you can now make going outside a regular occurrence. Fit either a wooden, aluminum or steel ramp onto your house and you can safely and easily come and go from your home as you please. The steel ramp is probably the most popular because it’s so sturdy and can easily ride out any kind of weather. Give the company a call and see if they can come to take a look at your property to see what the best design choices would be.
Remember to stretch
Whether you’re in a wheelchair or not, you should always stretch to fight off any muscle atrophy. When we are no longer using our muscles, they begin to wilt, just like anything else in the natural world. If you stop walking, your legs will become weak. If you stop using an arm, it will become thin and weak. So, no matter who you are or whatever kind of disability you have, remember to try your best to stretch every morning and every time you go to bed. Just set aside 5-10 minutes of your day and night, and do the basic rotation and stretches. It will get the blood to flow again and remind your body to keep feeding your muscle tissue with nutrients, protein, vitamins, and minerals to maintain mass.
Speak to someone
The thing that affects disabled people the most is mental health. Because you have to struggle with abnormal conditions every day, you also have to contend with feeling more anxiety, more vulnerability, and feeling more low when you’re sad. To speak with someone about your mental health, such as a local mental health charity, a national mental health charity, or with friends. Chances are, your friends will be feeling or coping with something similar as lockdown has made a rise in mental health cases.
It’s very important to change your home to your own needs. So if you are in a wheelchair, building a ramp will allow you to come and go from your home, without anyone’s help. It gives you more independence and confidence.
