Moving home is something many families choose to do at one time or another, whether this is because they want access to better schools, a nicer neighborhood, or simply because they need more space. However, it’s important to make sure your family is prepared for the move. You might be excited, but your children could be nervous and apprehensive – although they might not tell you about it, or even acknowledge it themselves. Their behavior could change, and you might not realize it’s because they have this on their mind. If you want to make sure you’re ready to move as a family, read on to make sure you’re all on the same page.
Discuss What This Means With Your Kids
Don’t put off speaking to your kids about the move. You need to show them that you’re all in this together, and withholding information from them can make them anxious. Let them know in advance so they have time to prepare, and allow them to ask questions and answer them as best you can.
Make Sure They Can Share Their Worries With You
Make sure your kids feel like they can share their worries with you. If you say things like ‘don’t be silly’ to them, it invalidates their fears – even if you think that the things they are worried about really are silly. Try to validate their feelings, but then give them reasons why they don’t need to worry. For example, if they are worried about never seeing their friends again, explain that they can call them and facetime them regularly and that you will arrange meets ups with them if you can. Also, get them excited about how many new friends they are going to meet!
Show Them Pictures And Take Them There if You Can
To avoid any nasty surprises, show your kids pictures of the house, neighborhood, and any other relevant images so they know what to expect. They might have more questions after seeing pictures. You could even let them speak to your real estate agent so they feel like they are a part of the process.
Talk To Them About The Exciting Things In The Area
What is there to do in the area? Do your research and get them excited about it!
Get Them Ready If They Are Moving Schools
If your kids have to move schools, show them pictures of that, too, and make sure they are ready for this. Visiting in person beforehand could be beneficial.
Give Your Kids Jobs
Allow them to pack their own toys into boxes, making them feel helpful and giving them a little responsibility that should stop them from feeling out of the loop.
Plan To Make Memories In Your New House
Make memories in your new house as soon as you can – have some fun film and games nights, and make it a place full of laughter right away.
Get Their Rooms Ready First
Getting your kid’s rooms ready first will be comforting to them and ensure that any lost sleep is kept to a minimum. Let them help decorate it and make decisions about it too, so they feel like this is a great space.
