Good behavior is always an issue for parents, I have four awesome children and they all have different personalities but all four have exhibited bad behavior at times. Even more frustrating for a parent is when you have a child with special needs that requires a little more than the rest of the kids when it comes to teaching proper behavior. I have a son who is AD/HD and it’s not that he doesn’t understand what I’m saying, the problem is that he is not able to focus or concentrate long enough most of the time to actually listen to me.
I’ve found that the one thing that does get my son’s attention better than anything is a computer app! Technology is everywhere and can certainly be a wonderful way to get things done efficiently and easily and it certainly does have a positive effect when it comes to my son. Luckily, I was given the opportunity to review a great app for the iPad called Behavior with Friends.
The Behavior with Friends App was created by Sarah Clifford Scheflen, M.S., CCC-SLP, a practicing speech-language pathologist who specializes in providing a range of therapies to children including children with developmental disorders. She states: “Behavior issues are a common complaint from parents. Parents need strategies to help teach their children how to behave. Behavior with Friends not only teaches children how to behave appropriately, but also provides tips to parents on how to implement their own behavior modifications.”
I first introduced my son to the Behavior with Friends App after school one day…by that time of the day they are both wound up and have tons of energy. After a snack my older son sat down with the iPad and began to use the app. The app has lessons and scenarios that teach in wither easy or normal modes and encourage children to think about the situation before making a decision. This teach2talk application uses targeted video modeling to help teach children how to behave appropriately, solve problems, make good decisions, and properly communicate with their friends and other peers in common social scenarios and settings.
My son thought that the Behavior with Friends app was fun and it really engaged his interest especially when he could give the correct answer!
Scenarios and Lessons:
- Strategies to resolve conflicts with peers without resorting to tantrums, name calling or physical violence.
- Self-management and dealing with anger and frustration in a positive fashion.
- Sharing and taking turns with friends.
- Being a good sport.
- Telling the truth.
- Bullying.
- Not interrupting.
- Being nice to friends and not taunting and encouraging friends who are less competent instead of teasing and
- Appropriate body boundaries.
Overall, my sons and I had an awesome experience with the Behavior with Friends app and would recommend it to any family that is interested in better behavior!
