Pets are amazing friends and life companions, but we can’t take them everywhere. It’s especially hard when we travel overseas and have to find a place for our furry friends to spend a couple of weeks. In this article, you can find a few different options that should be suitable. 

Pet Sitters 

One of the first and best options available to pet owners traveling abroad is to ask a friend or neighbor to visit your home regularly and look after your dog or cat. For this to work, your friend or family member will need a key and some instructions on how to look after the animal properly.

Pet sitters are usually affordable and convenient because they are friends, neighbors, or family members. Many pet sitters know the animal already so there is some familiarity, this also makes it easier for your pet who might be missing you at first. Remember to reward your pet sitter. 

Pet Boarding 

The next best option is a professional pet sitter or a pet boarding agency that will take care of your pet for the duration of your vacation. A dog boarding service will have excellent facilities for your dog so they feel comfortable and well looked after while you are enjoying the sun and sea. 

A pet boarding station is a low-stress environment for your dog with professional staff on hand to make play with them and train them if necessary. That’s right, you have had your dog trained by a professional while you are away on vacation. It’s an excellent option for many dog owners.    

Local Vets 

Local vets often have a boarding service you can take advantage of when you go on vacation. If you have a good relationship with your vet that’s even better, it means they are already familiar with your pet and have an established bond. However, vet services can be a little pricier overall. 

If you have exhausted the above options and you need a place for your pet at short notice contact your local vet and arrange a boarding service for the duration of your trip. When your pet is with your local vet you know they are in good hands, although it might be less ideal. 

Local Volunteers 

If you are struggling with a pet sitting service consider a local volunteer service to stand in for a professional agency. There are advantages and disadvantages to this approach; on the plus side, you have a pet sitting service for less, on the downside you have a less experienced sitter. 

Volunteer sitters might be trainee vets or local individuals with a passion for animals. These services are usually cheaper than a pet boarding service but you might be unfamiliar with the pet sitter and their characteristics. Make sure you carry out a background check before hiring.  

Take Them 

In a pinch you can always take your pet with you on vacation; again, there are pros and cons to this approach. On the downside it costs extra, requires more organization, and makes your pet uncomfortable, on the plus side you have the joy of spending a vacation with your best friend.
