Looking back, it’s hard to believe how much our day to day lives have changed in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent lockdown. We’re a few weeks into our nationwide lockdown and it’s safe to say that some of us are coping better than others. We’re all thinking about the people, places, and activities we miss. We’re all looking forward to a return to normalcy while prioritizing public health. Still, many of us are starting to feel a degree of cabin fever as we live and work in a relatively confined space that we share with our loved ones.
This can create a mounting feeling of stress and anxiety which is exacerbated the longer you spend indoors away from natural light, trees, flowers and plants. If you want to remain physically and psychologically healthy while on lockdown…
You can and should go out every day
The coronavirus outbreak is teaching us a lot about our health and how we may have been taking it for granted. We’re learning how important it is to get our daily dose of exercise outdoors and how it can affect our sense of wellbeing. Even under lockdown, you can legally leave your home for a walk, run or bike ride, and you should take the time to do this every day.
Keep a healthy distance from strangers
Social distancing is extremely important when leaving home. We dure to stay roughly 6 feet / 2 meters away from strangers at all times. The virus is transmitted through droplets of moisture which can be transmitted from one person to another when they cough, sneeze or even breathe. So, even if you bump into an old friend or neighbor, maintain that distance with anyone who doesn’t share your home.
The roads are quieter but remain road smart
There are fewer cars on the road right now. As a result, some may feel emboldened to go running on the road. However, this is not advisable. Certainly not if you’re going to be wearing headphones. These can make you less likely to hear the noise from an approaching car. Quieter and more open roads are making some motorists break out in speeding tickets! In their zeal to open up their car’s throttle, they may not be able to stop effectively if they see you running in the road.
Sure, an accident attorney like Halperin & Halperin, P.C. may be able to get justice for you if you’re injured due to someone else’s negligence. But with the world on lockdown, it may take much longer for a personal injury claim to be resolved. Prevention is always the best cure!
Keep your hands to yourself
When out exercising, be wary of touching fences, posts and guard rails. The virus can last on surfaces like plastic and stainless steel for up to 3 days. So be sure to keep your hands to yourself and avoid touching your surroundings. And, of course, be sure to wash your hands when you return home.
Don’t always go out alone
Finally, while a walk alone may give you the solitude you need, it’s also a good idea to mix it up by going out with your spouse or family from time to time, as well. Not only is the company good for you, but it will also make you appear less vulnerable should any predatory people be looking around your neighborhood.
